Proper way to create a .gz file for an extension package?

I'm trying to create a simple extension package, but the Update Manager keeps telling me, "The does not appear to contain a valid update package (not a valid TAR file?). The command I am using is:

tar -cvzpf package.tar.gz from_000

Shane,

Are you running on a Mac? If so, you can't use the standard tar command. Instead you need to use
gnutar --format gnu ...
to create the package.gz. The tar command that comes with Fink cooperates nicely with the Updater, so if you have Fink installed just make sure that /sw/bin is near the front of your PATH.
