Summary
Batch Manager support for SMTP over TLS (Secure send)

Description

The current Batch Manager (xtBatch 1.0 Beta) does not support SMTP over TLS.

This is becoming a very common requirement for SMTP servers, and Google Apps explicitly requires this.

As SSL support is already included in xTuple, it should be fairly straightforward to add this as an option.

I''ll work through this workaround for connect now. However, assuming that connect is the "engine" for the email functionality, are there plans to add TLS/SSL support to connect?

I''d hate to have to maintain this workaround on every machine in order to use the email integration.

This can be even more simply bypassed by configuring stunnel ( http://www.stunnel.org/ ) to perform the secure connection and pointing the BatchManager at the corresponding local port.

That said, the QSslSocket can be used as a drop in replacement for the Q3Socket used in the smtp class. This can be used in both encrypted and non-encrypted mode with only minimal changes to the current (3.3.0) batch manager code.

I know that there is a lot of work going on in relation to EDI profiles at the moment, so perhaps this could be incorporated with those changes.

Just to reiterate though, we don''t *need* this functionality to use the batch manager, it would just avoid having to configure an extra service to use the email functionality going forwards.

Ok. Thanks.

A: Just a nice to have, hence the feature request rather than a bug report.

This can be worked around by connecting to a local SMTP server with no TLS connection. The local server then forwards mails over TLS to the Google mail servers.

This may sound an unnecessary step (Why not just send the mail from the local mail server?) but doing it this way stores a copy of the outgoing mails in the appropriate accounts on Google, allowing them to be searched and cross referenced in the future.

Q: Is this a show stopper for you, or a nice to have?
