Ta Da! xTuple 3.5.1 Beta with Desktop is here.

UPDATE: The final version of xTuple Desktop is available for download. Remember that the Desktop requires xTuple 3.5.1 or higher. You'll need the Udpater to install the Desktop.

We got quite a bit of traffic on my initial blog of the forthcoming xTuple Desktop.  xTuple 3.5.1 Beta has new been posted along with the beta package for the desktop.  Download your copy today!

Yes, that's right the Desktop is a scripted Extension package.  The plan is to install it by default in all xTuple databases by the 3.5.1 final release, but it is and will be a separately maintained Extension that makes it easy to review, update and extend.  For the beta release you will need to install the package separately.  All the beta release files may be found on Source Forge here.  Specifically the Desktop is in the PostBooks Packages folder along with Time and Expense, Point of Sale and a couple other packages.  It can be loaded on to your 3.5.1 beta database with our Updater utility, the same one used to upgrade xTuple from one version to another.

The Desktop has been expanded substantially from my initial blog to include several desktop pages that are accessed by a toolbar on the left.  There are between two to four informational dock widgets on each page, each with drill down capabilities.  All of the pages and dock widgets have security controls and all graphical launch buttons and drill down screens inherit pre-existing security controls.  Also, as previously mentioned, the dock widgets can be moved around and "undocked" (made floating outside the desktop), and those positions will be remembered.

I'll let some screen shots do most of the talking, but you really need to try it to get the full story:

Are you logged in as someone

Are you logged in as someone other than the administrative user that performed the upgrade? I found this privilege related bug shortly after the beta was cut that has already been fixed for the next release: http://www.xtuple.org/issuetracker/view.php?id=11314. It only manifests itself if you do not have privileges to the manufacturing activities dock window.

If it is something else I suggest posting your problem with more information such as the exact error message or screen shot in our issue tracker (http://www.xtuple.org/issuetracker/). The beta release is a great time to give feedback on problems found with the software.

Note in general that there is a new module in privileges called "Desktop" with a privilege for each component. If you log in without privileges for some or all dock widgets they will be hidden with the ability to activate them disabled. Even if you subsequently grant the privileges and log in again, they will still all be hidden because the application will remember that was their state in your last log in. In that case go to Window > Desktop to make dock widgets visible that were previously hidden because of security constraints. Once you show them, they should stay shown on subsequent log ins until you otherwise hide them again.

Nice Direction

I really like the idea of a guided procedure which guides an end-user through the transaction process in a clear and intuitive manner. And I think your Desktop fits that nicely. Tied in with a summary of items or statistics and the ability to customise the desktop to meet an individual company's requirements, I think you are on to a real winner.

The only comment I would like to add is that it would be nice to be able to customise the Welcome page to allow company specific information to be added there.

Well Done.

Great advance

This is a great advance for the presentation of xTuple and a very great tool, my only question is that if it is possible to translate it.

Thank you for this, and great work !

Nice - backround not showing

Nice touch... one small thing... I am not getting the darker grey background behind each icon grouping e.g. in Sales..... Order has it's group of icons stand out with a darker grey ... ditto for the other groups. In my desktop it's all one shade of grey.

3.8.1

Hi, Brody:

For 4.0 you'd want the 3.8.1 version of the desktop. We distribute that on SourceForge. Here's a link:

Hi Pierce,

Just a suggestion.

It would be nice if the Compatibility Matrix were enhanced to include links to the files/webpages/sites where one could get the different versions shown in the matrix.
