Adding Flexibility to Sales Account Assignments - A step towards multi-company in a single xTuple database :D

Click for full-size, really big graphic...

Hey! How have you all been?! I've stepped back into my cubicle and will attempt to grace the xTuple Blog-o-sphere once again with something I think EVERYONE may find interesting.

Sales Account Assignments - In the Beginning...

Setting up Sales Account Assignments within the bounds of Site, Product Category and Customer Type is more than sufficient to meet the needs of most organizations.  However, in some circumstances a company may sell the same products in many different ways. Depending on how much detail a particular Controller wants to see in the General Ledger, they may have a need to book sales to differing accounts by the Type of Sale or the Region/Area the product was shipped into.

In xTuple, a Customer can only have one Customer Type. Sales Account Assignments can use this Customer Type to drive sales to particular GL Account Assignments based on the Site, the Product Category and the Customer Type. This does run into its limitations... quickly. One work-around in the past was to duplicate your customer. This can make things messy. Very Messy if you have many different ways to Sell a product and you want that detail in your GL. This leads to an Unwieldly Matrix of Sales Account Assignments and Duplicate Customers, Nightmares, Headaches and Nausea. Read more »

Go Live: Are We Ready?

The clients I work with frequently ask me this question once we are deep into the implementation.  I never give a straight answer.  You see, I believe you should know if you are ready and with the right preparation you will.  So let's take a high level look at what must happen before you will be confident enough to go live.

Fixed Asset Management

Earlier this year there was a strong discussion on the inclusion of Fixed Asset management into the xTuple product (forum discussion here).  Many people contributed ideas and support.  This interest lead to the development of a Specification which in turn generated more ideas and interest.  The original intention of the discussion was to determine what additional functionality was needed by the xTuple community.  Well after many months, the first release of xTuple Fixed Asset Management is here.  I am proud to announce the release of the Fixed Asset extension package for xTuple. Read more »

Enhanced Commissions

Related to Features Incident 14761.

The current xTuple sales rep commissions feature has limited functionality that may not meet the needs of businesses with more complex and dynamic comissioning requirements. For example, the current system only allows for one sales rep per Sales Order, and only supports a flat commission rate per rep.

The Enhanced Commissions spec covers both core (C++) changes and the contents of a new package (scripts) that will be maintained as part of the Enterprise Edition. The core updates are not described here, but are covered by a number of incidents associated with the omnibus Enhanced Commissions incident # 14761. The contents of the Enhanced Commissions package are covered in this specification. Read more »

Installing PostBooks... the long way.

While we do publish PostBooks Installers that will quickly and easily install PostBooks, some people like to make the installation a fun little project by installing the individual components.  And really, it's not a bad way for you to practice installing, or to get hands on experience with some of the pieces that we try to hide from you in the packaged installers.  This will be like taking a long walk, but in the end, it's the journey that counts.  Now, if you've been following my writings/ramblings for a while, or if you have met me in person, you know that I'm fiercly aligned with the Penguin Nation, that is, I use, recommend, endorse, and otherwise try to sell everyone on using some flavor of Linux.  Well, In this blog, you'll notice I don't say "Now, go to 'terminal' and..." .  Yep - ALL GUI.  How's THAT for a surprise?  The other surprise is that I wrote this using screen shots from Windows 2000.

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Keeping track of version numbers

With the advent of xTuple's new extension architecture, it's easier than ever for software developers to write custom add-ons to the core PostBooks product. This also means system administrators may now find themselves managing multiple applications in addition to their xTuple ERP--each having a slightly different version number than the next. To help everyone keep track of which version goes with which, we've created the xTuple compatibility matrix. We hope you'll visit this page (particularly during the upgrade process). And if you're a third-party developer, we hope you'll add your own application to the growing list.

Publishing the version matrix at this stage was a timely move, as anyone upgrading to the 3.4.0 Release Candidate will need to consult the chart for important update information. Read more »

Printed documentation (with investment protection)

In case you hadn't heard, the Reference Guide for xTuple ERP 3.3 is now available for sale on the xChange. This is the .PDF version of the document, and it retails for $195. We started publishing the .PDF version during the previous release cycle, in response to repeated requests from community members who said they wanted it--and would be willing to pay for it, too. As you might imagine, selling printable docs is one way open source erp software projects can generate revenue. It's also a relatively low cost way for community members to contribute financially to our project. What's more, having printed documentation is valuable, we've found, for people who are in the process of selecting an ERP system for their business. So, what's the deal I'm talking about? Version 3.3 installers now available - for download and hosted demo

Greetings all,

Just a quick note that the much-discussed xTuple ERP version 3.3.0 is now available for download at SourceForge.

Once again, we've built all-in-one installers for Windows, Linux, and Mac - which can install the xTuple ERP client, as well as a local copy of PostgreSQL, up to three sample PostBooks Edition databases, the xTuple Updater tool (also used for loading and unloading Packages), and the OpenRPT report writer.

And of course, the client can connect to either your own local database (usually PostBooks), or your own private hosted demo database featuring the full Manufacturing Edition functionality (including the new DRP engine in 3.3).

We look forward to your feedback! Read more »
