xTuple at Macworld - Come on by

MacworldThis week the annual Apple Technology love-in known as Macworld is going on in San Francisco.  In these days of diminishing Trade Shows, this show not only survives, it thrives.  This is a show for all enthusiasts, fans and users of Apple technology.  Walking through the the set up today, I observed row after row of booths that will be selling products to users of iPhones and iPads, and iPods, and of course Macs.  There are many consumer-oriented users of all of this technology, and at xTuple, we continue to see these consumers dragging their Apple passion back into the workplace.  Apple technology in business, like Apple's stock price, is on the rise.

The Matrix, reloaded

There's been a flurry of product developments here at xTuple in recent months. I'm thinking about the release of xTuple 3.6, Email Integration in xTuple Connect, Project Accounting, the Fixed Assets packages, updates to Time and Expense, and the new Web Portal suite of products.  I could go on....  At xTuple headquarters, we're of course running our own business on all the latest xTuple software. We're using xTuple ERP to take orders, buy goods and services, track time against projects—and more. And our support and bug ticketing systems operate via the Web Portal. We're biased, of course. We think everyone should be using the latest and greatest xTuple software. But we also know everyone can't drop everything to upgrade every time a new version comes out.

Enter the Matrix.

We recently updated the xTuple compatibility matrix to help make it easier for people to keep track of the various packages and applications they're using with their xTuple installation. We hope you'll visit the matrix page and become more familiar with how it works. It's a great resource if you're thinking of adding a new package to add to your existing xTuple system. Also, if you're planning to upgrade to a newer xTuple version soon, you can use the compatibility matrix to help navigate the process.

Of course, the easiest thing in the world is to let us handle the upgrade process for you. Read more »

Asset Maintenance Specification posted

I have just posted a specification for extending the Fixed Assets functionality to include Maintenance.  This was my original goal when I started the discussion around Fixed Assets last year and I have now started formulating a design and specification.  I welcome all commments and contributions.  The specification can be found at Asset Maintenance.

The specification goes into more detail and provides some example screenshots to help visualize what the end design might be like.  Read more »

From one Accountant to another

xTuple is an excellent tool for accountants.  From a multi-segment chart of accounts to a financial report generator, xTuple is a powerful tool that can easily meet all of your accounting needs. One great example of xTuple's accounting functionality - monthly closes can be completed nearly simultaneously with month end. Just think, financial reports for last month on the first day of the following month!

And those reports can be customized to meet your specific needs - your choice of how to group, total, summarize individual accounts from the COA, as well as row and column layouts which can easily be copied to create new reports.

So how else does xTuple specifically assist the accountant in their job? The various xTuple modules are fully integrated with the accounting functions on a single platform. Manufacturing transactions are posted to the general ledger, sales and shipping transactions recorded as they occur. Accounts receivable are recorded and tracked, and invoices from vendors are all managed within xTuple. All the while, debits and credits remain in balance as your organization goes about conducting business. Thanks to the reporting functionality you can immediately review the real-time state of your business. The accountant can be a superstar utilizing many of the controls and tools available in xTuple.

I will attempt to highlight some of these tools in this blog and also in a series of Web-Based Training classes entitled Advanced Tips for Accounting Professionals.  The first is this Tuesday, Jan. 18, from 4-6 pm.

Introducing xTuple 3.6 ... and details on new Hosted Demo

We've been very busy here at xTuple as 2010 gave way to 2011.  Just before Christmas, we quietly released xTuple 3.6.0; you can download both the all-in-one installer, or the binaries and databases separately, at Sourceforge.

Lots of great new features in this release, including loads of exciting user interface enhancements such as having autocomplete on all search clusters, the ability to jump to edit list or create new from combo box lists, redesigned Setup menus, and Print Preview on all report windows!  There are also some powerful accounting enhancements under the covers (see John's blog for more on that), and - we're very happy to announce - an enhanced version 2.0 of the free Time and Expense module that incorporates all the features in the previous "Pro" edition, plus much more!

Finally, we've rolled out some major enhancements to the Hosted Demo experience, including - for the first time - the ability to access your Hosted Demo database through either the GUI client or your very own instance of the xTuple Web Portal (including the Support and B2B Sales modules).

If you, like us, have fallen in love with the fictional Pro Diem toys company, now's your chance to check out the Pro Diem website, track customer support issues, and buy yourself a (fake) Yellow Tough Truck online! Read more »

There's a new video on the enhanced Time and Expense 2.0 package on the xTuple YouTube channel.  Learn how to enter time and expenses in xTuple ERP, tightly integrated with Project Management.  Create invoices and reimbursements for employees and contractors.  Track actual project time and expenses compared to budget.  It's all free and open source, and works with any edition of xTuple.  Both the free T&E package, and a PDF of the Product Guide, are available in the xChange App Store.

ERP Failure or ERP Success?

I came across an interesting article earlier this week.  Infoworld's Biggest ERP Failures of 2010 is focused on multiple implementation blunders.  This is meant to be your typical "Failed ERP" piece, but the first couple of examples aren't even ERP, they're Payroll and CRM.  Beyond that, there are multiple examples of SAP failures.   Read more »
