Introducing xTuple 3.6 ... and details on new Hosted Demo

We've been very busy here at xTuple as 2010 gave way to 2011.  Just before Christmas, we quietly released xTuple 3.6.0; you can download both the all-in-one installer, or the binaries and databases separately, at Sourceforge.

Lots of great new features in this release, including loads of exciting user interface enhancements such as having autocomplete on all search clusters, the ability to jump to edit list or create new from combo box lists, redesigned Setup menus, and Print Preview on all report windows!  There are also some powerful accounting enhancements under the covers (see John's blog for more on that), and - we're very happy to announce - an enhanced version 2.0 of the free Time and Expense module that incorporates all the features in the previous "Pro" edition, plus much more!

Finally, we've rolled out some major enhancements to the Hosted Demo experience, including - for the first time - the ability to access your Hosted Demo database through either the GUI client or your very own instance of the xTuple Web Portal (including the Support and B2B Sales modules).

If you, like us, have fallen in love with the fictional Pro Diem toys company, now's your chance to check out the Pro Diem website, track customer support issues, and buy yourself a (fake) Yellow Tough Truck online! Read more »

Video on Time & Expense 2.0

There's a new video on the enhanced Time and Expense 2.0 package on the xTuple YouTube channel.  Learn how to enter time and expenses in xTuple ERP, tightly integrated with Project Management.  Create invoices and reimbursements for employees and contractors.  Track actual project time and expenses compared to budget.  It's all free and open source, and works with any edition of xTuple.  Both the free T&E package, and a PDF of the Product Guide, are available in the xChange App Store.

ERP Failure or ERP Success?

I came across an interesting article earlier this week.  Infoworld's Biggest ERP Failures of 2010 is focused on multiple implementation blunders.  This is meant to be your typical "Failed ERP" piece, but the first couple of examples aren't even ERP, they're Payroll and CRM.  Beyond that, there are multiple examples of SAP failures.   Read more »

xTuple issuetracker updated to use xTuple CRM

Today we are announcing version 1.1 of the xTuple Web Portal Support module, and we're putting it to work immediately.

It has long been our goal to replace our web-based issue tracker, which has been running on a third-party product called Mantis, with a solution that would connect directly to our xTuple database. With the Support module, bug reports, feature requests, and customer support incidents all flow directly into the xTuple database. From that point we can manage everything through the xTuple client software back at xTuple world headquarters.  Read more »

iTuple: More xTuple Mobilization

Last year, iTuple began the mobilization of xTuple by providing a mobile CRM client for xTuple.  But, as many xTuple users have suggested to us, there is more to xTuple than CRM.  Much, much more. Read more »

Fixed Asset Management

Earlier this year there was a strong discussion on the inclusion of Fixed Asset management into the xTuple product (forum discussion here).  Many people contributed ideas and support.  This interest lead to the development of a Specification which in turn generated more ideas and interest.  The original intention of the discussion was to determine what additional functionality was needed by the xTuple community.  Well after many months, the first release of xTuple Fixed Asset Management is here.  I am proud to announce the release of the Fixed Asset extension package for xTuple. Read more »

The Pristine General Ledger

I've worked with several accountants over the years and one thing I've noticed about them is that they generally like things neat and orderly. Unfortunately the real world is often messy and chaotic. Transactions get entered for the wrong accounts, quantities, or dates, which leads to reversal transactions, then yet another set of corrected transactions. Even with a flawless transaction record a company of even a moderate size can end up with thousands of general ledger entries that make finding the source transaction of any questionable trial balance number like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack. Several features are being introduced in 3.6.0 to make life cleaner and more manageable for our accountants in the real world including a smarter G/L account search widget, the ability to modify erroneous general entries and a new optional Journal system. Read more »

More Gain, Less Pain getting started in 3.6

UPDATE: The release candidate of xTuple 3.6.0 is available for download (no installer yet, just binaries and databases).

We have really ramped up our efforts this year to increase the appeal and usability of the user interface. From the new Desktop and Quick Start Wizard, to  improved search functionality we have focused efforts on making it easier to get started and use xTuple.  Version 3.6, now in Beta, will continue that trend by allowing users to launch virtually any document from any other document.   That's right:  No more hunting around the menu system trying to find the edit list for the records you are searching.  Just jump to where you need to go from right where you are.

The new search cluster introduced in 3.5 now replaces all searchable widgets including customer, vendor and work order, and now you can create documents from any of those by selecting "New" on the menu list.  Similarly The combo box pictured on the left also includes the ability to jump directly to the edit list for those items (provided you have privileges of course).

But that's not all.  We've completely reorganized and consolidated the maintenance areas of xTuple in one common and easy to understand "Setup" screen. Read more »

Accounting for year-end

As year-end draws near, it's not uncommon for businesses to begin to consider polishing up their accounting system or switching off legacy applications in preparation for the new year.  The accounting related community forums become busy with chatter as does xTuple customer support.  One message has become loud and clear to us over the years -  more accounting!

(Waiting for a punch line?  No, we're serious!) Read more »
