xTuple Fixed Asset Maintenance (Planned and Preventative Maintenance)

I am pleased to announce the first release of the Asset Maintenance package is now available on the xChange bringing Planned and Unplanned maintenance functionality to the xTuple ERP solutions (http://www.xtuple.com/node/2284).  This package is based on a Design Specification posted in January (http://www.xtuple.org/node/3809).

The Maintenance package is designed to allow organizations to plan maintenance of assets into the future and to schedule the preventative maintenance of assets to reduce or eliminate costly breakdowns.  The unthinkable always happens so Unplanned Maintenance is also covered in this package. Read more »

Getting creative with commissions

New feature in xTuple will offer greater control over sales rep commissions.

Everybody loves a reward, right? The right reward can make your employees work harder, and drive your company to success. The standard way to reward sales people is to pay them a percentage of the sale, otherwise known as a commission. xTuple software has always allowed you to assign a commission percentage to each sales rep, and to record the commission to be paid to that rep for each invoice. They make the sale, they get the reward. It's a basic but effective commissioning system that suffices for many companies.

But others would like to see more. In the hands of a creative sales manager, commissions is one of those business arts, like pricing and discounts, where people can mold sophisticated architectures aimed at influencing behavior in specific ways. Perhaps you want to encourage reps to push a particular product line, or to sell closer to the list price with less discount. Maybe you want to set commissions by item or by customer type, rather than assigning fixed rates to individual sales reps. This kind of flexibility can give an innovative sales manager the power to shape a sales strategy, and to reward reps for aligning with the overall goals.

Up to this point, xTuple has not offered that level of flexibility in sales rep commissioning. We have received requests over time to add features, but only recently did a company decide these features were important enough to sponsor an enhancement to the product. And so, the Advanced Commissions project was born. Read more »

Calling All Accountants and CPA's...We Want to Talk to You!

People often discover xTuple by searching phrases like "Quickbooks Alternative." It's interesting how few choices there are for companies who've outgrown entry level accounting packages like Quickbooks or Peachtree but don't have (or want to spend) $100,000+ on mid-market solutions like Microsoft Dynamics, Sage or Epicor. Read more »

Drupalistas needed for translation portal

If you or someone you know is a Drupal programmer--and you have an interest in translating xTuple ERP--then we have some news for you. Earlier this summer, xTuple published the source code for its Translation Portal software. This is the same software currently hosting 28 language projects on the xTuple community website. The source code was released as part of the PostBooks project and is available under the same open source license (CPAL) as PostBooks. So how does this affect you? And more importantly, how could this impact the growing international community? The answers are fairly straightforward. Read more »

A pitch for patches

The paradigm shift Chris Ryan wrote about in his blog post last summer is well under way and proving to be very successful. I'm talking, of course, about the patch release strategy we adopted just about one year ago. Under this "new" paradigm, we've been able to quickly release the most urgent bug fixes to our users so you can have them as soon as possible. Read more »

New Release of BI for PostBooks

A new release of the Pentaho implementation of BI for PostBooks is available:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/erpbi/

Filters on dashboards are now persisted by user so the next time you use the dashboards your settings are remembered. Also, you can use URL parameters to set defaults for each filter. Also, the pre-installed Pentaho bundle now has the latest stable version of each Pentaho component.

Ideas and comments are welcome!

Implementation Success: You can't afford not to be trained

Ok, I'll admit it - I'm as guilty as the next person when it comes to not reading directions.  Generally, instructions are little more than packing materials which get thrown out with plastic wrap and styrofoam.

Once and a while it actually occurs to me that those directions may provide nuggets of valuable insight as to how to use a product and save me hours of time trying to solve the mystery on my own.  And I know I'm not the only one out there with these bad habits, otherwise, there wouldn't be so many condensed product guides available.  Not to mention online user classes and a whole publishing industry geared around training manuals for dummies and idiots.

In our era of multitasking information overload, who has time to read the directions - much less take a training class!  It will be faster - and economical - to just figure it out as you go, right?

Wrong.

Batten down the Hatches!!! Encrypting your PostgreSQL Traffic with OpenSSL.

It's 3AM... do you know what your server is doing?

You probably don't know. If you do know, you need to do something other than worry about your server.

In most cases, it's probably not doing anything more than when you left it at the end of the day.  But, during the day, you have some external users connecting, querying your PostBooks or xTuple databases - All seemingly innocent... or ARE THEY?! It could be some MITM parsing your datastream. Read more »
