Go Live: Are We Ready?

The clients I work with frequently ask me this question once we are deep into the implementation.  I never give a straight answer.  You see, I believe you should know if you are ready and with the right preparation you will.  So let's take a high level look at what must happen before you will be confident enough to go live.

Attention Scripters and Report Writers

Internal work on the xTuple ERP 3.8.0 release is winding down - the first release candidate was published a few weeks ago and a second RC and final release are coming soon. Now is the time to start planning for 3.9.

I don't know yet what features will be added in 3.9. There will be some internal changes, though, that you need to prepare for if you write scripts, MetaSQL statements, or reports. Read more »

New Super Powers for Developers in 3.8

Right after every major release I like to draw attention to new features that may not be immediately evident or even included on the product roadmap. Now that 3.8 has been published as a release candidate I'd like to point out that the new Display class that was introduced in 3.7 has been exposed to our JavaScript interface in 3.8 so that creating new table-style reports is easier than ever. Read more »

What is your time worth?

In a do-it-yourself economy, with a do it yourself product, it's maybe a little too easy to talk yourself into trying work through  software implementation challenges on your own.  But before you go down that road, think about what economists call "opportunity cost" - what is all that time you're spending really costing you?  And how much better off would you be, if you could just plug into an xTuple subject matter expert? Read more »

It's Official: Lion gets the xTuple Stamp of Approval

The title says it all. We ran the xTuple client through our test battery on the lastest Apple operating system and it has passed with flying colors. As of today we officially support running our published xTuple 3.7.4 distribution on Macintosh Lion.*

*Note however, that PostgreSQL 9 that ships with Lion is not currently supported. xTuple 3.7.4 must connect to an 8.3 or 8.4 database. If you use the xTuple installer it will install an 8.4 PostgreSQL database. Support for PostgreSQL 9 is coming in xTuple 3.8.0 which is currently in beta.

xTuple Fixed Asset Maintenance (Planned and Preventative Maintenance)

I am pleased to announce the first release of the Asset Maintenance package is now available on the xChange bringing Planned and Unplanned maintenance functionality to the xTuple ERP solutions (http://www.xtuple.com/node/2284).  This package is based on a Design Specification posted in January (http://www.xtuple.org/node/3809).

The Maintenance package is designed to allow organizations to plan maintenance of assets into the future and to schedule the preventative maintenance of assets to reduce or eliminate costly breakdowns.  The unthinkable always happens so Unplanned Maintenance is also covered in this package. Read more »

Getting creative with commissions

New feature in xTuple will offer greater control over sales rep commissions.

Everybody loves a reward, right? The right reward can make your employees work harder, and drive your company to success. The standard way to reward sales people is to pay them a percentage of the sale, otherwise known as a commission. xTuple software has always allowed you to assign a commission percentage to each sales rep, and to record the commission to be paid to that rep for each invoice. They make the sale, they get the reward. It's a basic but effective commissioning system that suffices for many companies.

But others would like to see more. In the hands of a creative sales manager, commissions is one of those business arts, like pricing and discounts, where people can mold sophisticated architectures aimed at influencing behavior in specific ways. Perhaps you want to encourage reps to push a particular product line, or to sell closer to the list price with less discount. Maybe you want to set commissions by item or by customer type, rather than assigning fixed rates to individual sales reps. This kind of flexibility can give an innovative sales manager the power to shape a sales strategy, and to reward reps for aligning with the overall goals.

Up to this point, xTuple has not offered that level of flexibility in sales rep commissioning. We have received requests over time to add features, but only recently did a company decide these features were important enough to sponsor an enhancement to the product. And so, the Advanced Commissions project was born. Read more »

Calling All Accountants and CPA's...We Want to Talk to You!

People often discover xTuple by searching phrases like "Quickbooks Alternative." It's interesting how few choices there are for companies who've outgrown entry level accounting packages like Quickbooks or Peachtree but don't have (or want to spend) $100,000+ on mid-market solutions like Microsoft Dynamics, Sage or Epicor. Read more »
